Diversity - May 26

Matt. 7:17 Every good tree bears good fruit.

A mother in my Parents of Queer Kids group said wistfully, “I hope that my family and especially my gay son can someday feel normal.” What a heartbreaking statement. Christians have historically deemed certain groups, such as those who are not straight or cisgendered, as “abnormal” and in need of “healing.”

Beginning in 2014, I embarked on a long journey of getting to know queer Christians, mostly under age 40, mostly Asian American, through an LGBTQ+ support group that I started at my church. I’ve met several hundred queer Christians over the years and developed significant friendships with a number of them. What they have taught me is that they are resilient individuals, and remarkable Christians, having been persecuted and tested by fire in a variety of “Christian” settings. Their dedication to Christ is resolute, and they are particularly open-hearted about service and ministry. My own lifelong faith is put to shame by the sincerity and devotion of my queer friends.

Anyone with eyes to see can recognize the good fruit borne in the lives of those who are often excluded from the church. May we have the tender heart of Jesus, embracing and including these queer siblings in Christ.
